Stampede returned to the races for a smart win over 1600m and remains an outright $5 favourite in 2017 Naturalism Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au despite drifting, ahead of Abbey Marie ($6) and Amelie’s Star ($6.50).

Will Stampede justify favouritism and win the Naturalism Stakes, or will one of his rivals post an upset win?

Stampede ($5)

Stampede has found terrific form throughout his entire 2017 campaign so-far and should prove extremely difficult to beat under the conditions of the Naturalism Stakes. Posting a maiden black type win in the Listed Wagga Gold Cup (2000m) on May 5th, the High Chaparral entire repeated that effort and result in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) in Brisbane before being sent to the paddock. Stampede was too good for a smart field in the Craig Opie Cup (1600m) at The Valley first-up a fortnight ago and will only improve over 2000m and second-up. Beau Mertens will take the ride on Stampede and should find a good position in transit from a central draw.

Big Duke ($9)

Big Duke has been set for the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) this time and can gain ballot-free entry into the Spring Carnival feature race with a win in the Naturalism Stakes. The classy import was a standout for Darren Weir through this year’s Autumn Carnival; running second in the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) before posting consecutive wins in the Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m), Group 3 NE Manion Cup (2400m) and Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m). Ending his campaign a credible third in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m), the Raven’s Pass gelding has so-far finished fifth in both the Ramlegh Springs On Clyde Handicap (1600m) and Craig Opie Cup and should improve noticeably at 2000m.

Harlow Gold ($17)

Consistent performer Harlow Gold is another horse that will appreciate a rise in trip, is weighted ideally and has few excuses not to perform well in the Naturalism Stakes. Ending an impressive 2016 campaign second in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m), the Tavistock mare produced several typically strong performances and results through the recent Autumn Carnival; running third in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) and fourth in both the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) and Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) most notably. Having run fourth in the Ladbrokes Handicap (1500m) at The Valley first-up on August 26th, Harlow Gold did not receive many favours in transit in the LF Signs Group Handicap (2040m) last time out, but still managed to run on well for sixth.
