For many the 2011 Naturalism Stakes was the race of the day at Caulfield Racecourse last Saturday with the 2000m test attracting a good group of talented stayers.
December Draw was the clear cut favourite going into it and he certainly didn’t disappoint after picking up the gun run throughout the early stages.
In fact it was a great performance by Michael Rodd who ran along the rails from gate one not too far off the speed before finding a way to get two wide with cover before the bend.
From there that made it easy to draw clear with a run as they straightened and ensured if the horse was good enough he’d win the race.
That’s exactly what happened from there with December Draw pushing to the lead a couple of furlongs from home and simply drawing away at will under minimal pressure.
There was a late charge by the second placed At First Sight but he never seriously threatened for the win as December Draw cashed in for the favourite backers.
At first Sight finished half a length away on the line with another two length break to Lucky Eighty Eight in third and Above Average in fourth.
For those following Black And Bent things went almost exactly as we said they would last week with the jumps jump going back to the tail of the field from his outside gate.
He simply cruised form there before being sent wide down the straight and picking off a couple of the stragglers in the process.
In the end he finished in ninth spot but Robert Smerdon will probably be satisfied with that as he moves out to 2400m next start.
